Yaavadunam: Square Numbers Near 10, 100 & 1,000
Yaavadunam uses the extent of a deficiency to simplify selected calculations. For numbers just below a convenient base, adjust the leading part and square the deficiency for the trailing part.
Worked example: 98 squared
Use 100 as the base. The deficiency is 2, so subtract 2 from 98 to get 96 and write 2² as 04. Combining the parts gives 9,604.
